OUGD406 | Studio Brief 01 - Brief analysis & Plan

"Secret 7" is an annual event that combines art and music for a good cause"

My next brief is to design a 7" vinyl sleeve for one of the 7 songs selected by Secret 7" to enter into their annual competition.

The song I have selected to design for is The Maccabees - Go.

Submission guidelines -

Although the deadline for submissions is march, a requirement of my own brief is to complete this by Monday 9th Feb.

Tips given by our tutors were to consider the most obvious or literal response to the brief and try to avoid this. This will give us a greater chance in the competition and will enable us to product original work. Furthermore, we were advised to consider which artists we felt most entrants would design for.

I personally feel many entrants will design for The Maccabees, however I want to enjoy designing for the artist and this was my favourite song out of the 7.

My plan for the week is as follows -

Monday 2nd - Brief analysis and initial research
Tuesday 3rd - Create 30 thumbnails and continue research
Wednesday 4th - Organise critique for thumbnails and finalise/begin 5 designs
Thursday 5th - Design development
Friday 6th - Design development with aid of interim critique
Saturday 7th - Final design development
Sunday 8th - Final design development
Monday 9th - Submit finished design

I have also come up with some basic research ideas -

-Secret 7
-The Maccabees
-Vinyl Artists
-Illustrators/Photographers
-Create mood board with inspiration?

Advice from the brief -

"You should aim to explore the visual semiotics of the track from a personal perspective, how do you interpret the content, lyrics, genre, style etc in a visual sense. Begin but don't limit your visual research by examining celebrated music artwork designers including;

Peter Saville
Jamie Reed
Annie Leibovitz
Storm Thorgerson
Fred Deakin
Mark Farrow
Leif Podhajsky"
