OUGD405 | Studio brief 01 - Geometric Research

Jelle Martens
One of the themes I am currently considering is geometric pattern. This is because it will be quite easy for me to tie in the requirement of shapes but be creative. To find some inspiration, I searched "geometric" on Pinterest. I do not want to limit my research at this point to pattern specifically as I do not want to limit my ideas.
I was instantly drawn to this composition by Jelle Martins. I like how colour, photos and texture have all been brought together by the triangular pattern. I began to look at more work by this artist. In this image, the shapes are line drawings over the photograph. One of which is filled in with a low opacity. I  circle of a similar photograph is layered over the background photograph. I like how the images are hard to distinguish and I am inspired by the filters and effects used to make the photographs more interesting.

I then found this simple line drawing by an unknown artist. This image uses irregular triangles to create an unusual pattern rather than geometrically correct triangles. I am considering what makes a shape and how far I can stretch the properties of triangles but still fit within the brief.
This was a very similar image I found with an unknown artist. I liked the use of traditional techniques, in this case ink, to create the image. It is composed of triangular type forms and circular blobs of ink. I am considering how I can use traditional techniques as a starting point for my backing paper.

nodes connected by black lines, could leave it is it is for simplicity, incorporating it into a sleeve portion; alternatively have it as a sleeve/calf with the spaces coloured very brightly.

The infographics below were created using 3D paper shapes. I think this could be a really great starting point for me as I could take 3D shapes into photoshop and change the textures and pattern on the paper. I could even draw from any 3D paper shapes I created.

Description of the project:

"Pattern Matters is a graphic design-based project that seeks to inspire designers to look at pattern from a variety of different angles. The project is a collection of hand-made 3D infographics which look at different ways to amplify the role of pattern in design and encourage tactile exploration. The main focus of the project is is to demonstrate that pattern is a crucial element in graphic design, and not merely a decorating tool."
I feel that it would be easiest to create a geometric theme aimed at teenagers and young adults. I was originally looking to create a frame aimed at children and I feel that with this geometric theme that could be done but I don't think it would have the samr potential aimed at this market.
So I am currently looking to create either
 1. A children's photo frame (potentially aimed at 4-7 yrs?) with an under the sea theme or similar..
OR
2. A teenage/young adult photo frame with a geometric (pattern or otherwise) theme.

Moxham—Love this logo and branding. There is a great icon and I would love to see the angles used elsewhere in the branding.

This branding design was next to inspire me because the triangles create a fox shaped head. I feel this style could be incorporated into either brief and animals are a common interest.
