For todays task we were challenged to create a 3D hanging letterform using four planes- similar to that of the Channel 4 adverts as pictured above. As a group we decided to select this letter K to recreate because of it's quirky, fun nature.
To construct our letter accurately, we measured the original letterform and scaled this up x10. We had to bare in mind that the pieces closer would appear bigger. Therefore, we cut our pieces the exact size as this meant we could cut them into smaller sizes to fit the proportions of the letter.
We used cardboard boxes, string and tape to construct our letterform as you can see below.
Our final letterform needed to be visible through the view finder created in an A5 size. This made the task quite difficult as we needed to make sure the letterform fit into the box.
We had a lot of trouble getting all the pieces into the correct places and had to attach string across multiple corners in order to fix it perfectly. This proved more difficult as our tape and string kept falling apart!
After our first attempt the main body of the K was correct but the triangle was too large as it was too close to the viewfinder. So we cut this down with the time that we had. We found that overall the letter looked better from a distance than through the viewfinder.
Our final letter from a distance.
Here you can see the cardboard pieces contracting our letter from a side view.
I feel that this technique would be fun to experiment with. I think that creating 3D letterforms, photographing then digitalising these could be a good technique to play around with.
