Whilst researching ideas for my letterforms, the Occupy movement seemed to come up a lot- on the internet and through crits I have recieved. I've never been interested in politics so I dismissed the idea. However, I thought it would be good to have a look at the posters and campaigns supporting the movement to understand how other graphic designers have communicated the term occupying in text.
I was quite interested by the use of type in this design as this tied in with some of my initial drafts. The use of a digital like, bitmap font. Perhaps this is to communicate how we are in a modern age and things need to change! The font strokes are also fairly thick and the font is a large pt. This is common throughout all the posters and is suggestive to the protestors taking over and raising their voice about an important issue.
This poster has been designed in the style of a bar code, which I feel also fits in with the style of my bitmap fonts. I am unsure as to why this poster is in the style of a barcode- perhaps it is in relation to the economy and wealth of the 1%.
Although this poster is in another language, signs such as the fists in the bottom corner communicate that it is related to the occupy movement. I notice that the text in this poster is enlarged and at alternate angles. The text in the balloon ,as far as I can tell, states all the issues. The font is stretched out all over the balloon as it absorbs the space. This communicates the how the issues are taking over and occupying the land. Again, I feel that I have begun to explore these ideas already. I particularly like the extension of the first letters in the balloon. The strokes are highly exaggerated.
The text used in this poster is much taller but still has the same weight and emphasis. I particularly like the destruction and grittiness of the 1%- this is a sign of protest against the 1%.
I was pleased when I saw this poster because yet again I feel I have begun to follow the right path. My exploration of filling up the counters has already begun. I like how the letters seem cut out in a scruffy manner - I could use this technique to communicate business and being unable to take time over tasks.
This research has given me an insight into how my drafts could look in action. It has given me a confidence in the designs I was unsure about. I must be careful though as it is clear that my ideas are already around and I do not want to create a font too similar.
