Today we were given a module briefing and introduced to our next task! After choosing the font that I felt describes me (Bodoni), I have now been given a random word and must manipulate my font to produce a minimum of 10 letterforms which communicate this word.
To get us thinking we were put into groups and given a word to discuss together. Our group was given the word Modern. We decided to consider the opposite to the word, traditional, to help generate more ideas. At first, the words that our group thinking of were coming from a graphics/typographic point of view. We had to try and adjust our mindset to consider the words openly and how they apply in any context. Below is the ideas we came up with...
I was then given a random word to work with for my own letter forms. My word is 'Occupied/Occupy'. At first glance, this is a very difficult word to communicate through letterforms, but I am trying to remain open minded. After some brainstorming I have come up with more ideas than expected. I used the thesaurus to help me understand the word more and other related terms. I found it helpful to look at antonyms and I also found a website showing the word in various sentences. I used google images and Pinterest to get a visual idea how the word applies in day to day life (I had to sift through a lot of images of occupied toilets to get some ideas!)...I am trying to not think too far ahead at this moment in time because this may affect my current work and idea generation.
The main points that I have been interested in are the act of trying to keep a child occupied, perhaps during an event. This may be by the means of toys, games or colouring. Colouring is related to one of the words I found in the thesaurus - 'Fill/Full', the child is occupying or filling the spaces/outlines in a colouring book with crayons and colour. You also often occupy your time with procrastination, this can sometimes include doodling! I was also interested by the idea of the mind being occupied- I thought about how when people are in love, their mind tends to be occupied by that person and their mind becomes distracted.
These are all only initial ideas. My plan is to continue my research into the word and its applications. I will then begin to select ideas and see how these can be applied to my letterforms.
