When first faced with this brief, I did not feel confident to that I could come up with a creative design, I was also worried about the process of screen printing as I have not had much practice with this.
However, I surprised myself by creating a neat and professional screen print. This brief enabled me to learn about a key designer Erik Spiekermann, I feel that it is important to expand my knowledge of such influential designers. I was pleased with my research and how this informed every element of my design including colour, type and layout. I also feel that my approach to experimentation was good, which involved a process of reorganising the elements I had into a variety of compositions to produce designs quickly to allow a large amount for me to select and reject. It was also very helpful to have a critique with the second years as their knowledge was very valuable. As a result of this, I plan to seek feedback from the second years more often.
Unfortunately, I do feel that my design lacked creativity and interest. My design was very informed and I felt that it was appropriate for the book and my research, however, I do not feel the design particularly stands out. Prior to screen printing, I was unaware of the styles of ink available, I wish I had been more playful with this, as well as playful with the stock that was available to me. I also feel that I could have experimented with my full book jacket more. This was fairly rushed and I feel that the design would have been more successful if the whole jacket had connected together with the front cover as this design would have been more effective and creative.
