OUGD406 | Studio brief 03 - Brief Analysis Research and Planning

Studio Brief 03 is very exciting, but challenging. It involves working in a group to create a branding for the exhibition we will be having at Leeds Central Library. One branding from 11 groups will be chosen to go to print. Looking at the brief key things we need to consider are -

- Location
- Times
- Content
- Exhibitors
- Social media, links, hashtags etc
- Contact Details
- Format
- Signage, way-marking
- Opening night Invites

We will not be told the budget for the branding, but we must take this into account - considering how our branding can be created in different budgets. The branding must also be produced using college resources only - so all aspects of the design need to be considered. Our branding will be pitched in a 15 min presentation in 2 weeks time.

We began the brief by meeting at the location of the exhibition to gain an understanding of the space and look for inspiration. The building itself is beautiful. It is full of detailed patterns, tiling, wood and old books. However, the exhibition space takes a different clinical feel will white walls and a grey floor with bright blue circles hanging from the ceiling and metal grids to hold up the work. This contrast is interesting and we need to consider how we can fit our branding into this unusual space. Below are some photos from the Library that we found inspiring -

We then returned to the studio to begin discussing the brief and being generating some ideas. Whilst generating ideas, we looked at existing branding as well as the photos from the library.  We felt that by coming up with a name we might be able to generate a concept to follow through all our designs. We came up with the name "Judge a book by its cover" but we quickly found out a similar idea had been thought of by other groups. We also came up with the idea to create some of the branding in the shape of a book mark to relate back to the content of the exhibition. Another idea was to have a page corner peeling away or turned up to represent the turning of a page in a book, but also to show pulling away the old design to reveal the new cover. We continued sketching and generating ideas for the rest of the day but we were struggling to be creative. We decided to all go away and design some branding over the evening and show each other tomorrow. This way we felt that that we could approach the brief with a fresh face and maybe come up with some better ideas.
